Drip irrigation is a method of delivering water directly to the root system or to the soil surface in order to save water and achieve the best results. The water is supplied at a low speed through a system of small tubes. Drip irrigation is arranged as follows: under a small pressure, water is supplied through hoses to the desired place on the site and through droppers it enters under each plant.

The drip irrigation system will free you from running around with watering cans. The main thing is that with drip irrigation, water is slowly, drop by drop, supplied directly to the roots of the plants. Thus, the soil remains uniformly moist throughout the growing season, the plants are relieved of stress that occurs during the drying out of the beds, water is greatly saved. This system was developed for places with a shortage of water resources, for the most efficient use of them.

It can facilitate the maintenance of the farm by optimizing the moisture level for plants in the greenhouse or outdoors. It eliminates the need for the gardener to walk through the area with a watering can or a hose on a daily basis, which requires a lot of effort and time. We believe that it is better to enjoy the hot summer than to constantly think about watering the garden and waste precious time on this.

Advantages

Every gardener has met with the fact that irrigation takes a lot of energy and time, and even the hose does not reach the right place, bends and damages the plants. There is a more modern and practical option: the drip irrigation system. You can buy it ready-made or assemble it yourself from components that are sold separately.

A properly organized system automates the entire process, creating ideal conditions in the greenhouse, flower beds, garden beds and on the lawn, and also saves a significant amount of water by providing plants with only the required amount of moisture. At the end of the season, it is dismantled, and in late spring, when the ground begins to thaw, it is reassembled.

Drip irrigation on the beds.jpg

Drip irrigation not only provides the roots of plants with moisture, but also maintains the necessary air humidity. In warm rooms, the system can work all year round without stopping.

The installation and operating principle of the drip system is quite simple and does not require professional skills. You will need to organize the supply of water from a water supply system or a separate container (tank). The water supply is regulated using a special timer or a manual tap. Then the water passes through the filter and controller, which distributes the liquid through tubes and belts. They are located between the plants so that moisture flows directly to the roots through special holes.

The main advantages of the drip system:

  • Significant savings in water and fertilizers by 40-50%;
  • Reducing the risk of infections and diseases;
  • Increase in yield by 25-50%;
  • Plants are automatically provided with moisture in the right amount and at the right time;
  • Irrigated crops absorb up to 95% of the incoming water.
  • Reducing the number of weeds in the garden;
  • The kit is improved with modules and additional elements.

Classification

The drip irrigation system is a modern solution for growing plants in greenhouses and open field. It is profitable for garden crops, fruit trees, shrubs, berries. In Russia, it is widely used in the economy with the aim of developing the agricultural sector with minimal water consumption.

Systems presented on the market are divided into several categories: tubular and belt, working from a separately installed tank or water supply line. In addition, designs may differ in the type of water supply, manual or automatic adjustment, as well as the surface or underground installation.

The choice depends on the characteristics of the site and its size, the needs of the plants, the financial capabilities of the gardener and his personal preferences.

Scope of applications

Drip irrigation is gaining popularity every year and is used in both domestic and industrial environments of all sizes for growing plants, trees, fruits and vegetables.

The use of a drip irrigation system requires accurate calculations. This is an innovative technology, for the successful operation of which you need to correctly adjust the drainage of the amount of water for one plant per day. In many cases, this method of irrigation does not work, which indicates the improper use of the equipment.

In order for the drip irrigation system to provide the plants with the required amount of liquid, it is required to draw up its project, which takes into account: the type of plants, climatic conditions and the type of soil.

This type of irrigation has become a solution for such conditions in which it is ineffective or impossible to use other methods:

  • With a slope of the site or difficult terrain;
  • In dry and windy areas;
  • With a limited amount of water;
  • In areas with a small thickness of the fertile layer;
  • On the soils inclined to salinization.

Drip irrigation types

Drip irrigation of plants in the garden or in greenhouses can be organized as an underground or surface system. It is suitable for open beds and greenhouses, flower gardens, vineyards, separately growing trees and shrubs. Water consumption in annual terms with drip irrigation is reduced by up to 70%, and it is possible to organize its supply even if there is no well within the reach.

To understand which option is better, an overview of all available types of systems that are on the market helps:

  • Automatic system.
    Fully automatic systems are powered by a water supply system that receives moisture from a well or borehole. In this case, automatic watering will be carried out immediately with a liquid of a comfortable temperature, preventing root rot. Electronics ensures the supply of moisture to the roots on a schedule, with the desired frequency and intensity. It is reasonable to equip automatic irrigation in large areas, in greenhouses or in places with minimal precipitation or in cases when you leave the cottage for weeks or a month;
  • Semi-automatic system.
    Semi-automatic drip irrigation systems are able to independently turn on and off water on a schedule due to a special timer. But they only work from the storage tank. You will have to replenish the liquid supply in it yourself;
  • Mechanical system.
    Such systems work on the same principle as others. The only difference is that the water supply occurs exclusively by manually opening the tap or valve in the water tank. The liquid is supplied by gravity, without a pressure pump, the storage tank is installed at a certain height to ensure sufficient pressure in the line;

When using an additional reservoir, the temperature of the water for irrigation is more comfortable for the plants than when it comes directly from the well. In this case, it is better to organize the filling of the tank in such a way that the required water level is automatically maintained in the system. When it drops to a certain level, the float valve in the tank activates the pump to replenish the losses.

Drip irrigation system manufacturer

Drip irrigation is an irrigation method in which water is supplied directly to the root zone of the cultivated plants in small portions, regulated by means of dispensers - droppers (emitters). This method allows to significantly save water and fertilizers due to the absence of liquid loss due to evaporation and infiltration into the deep layers of the soil. Watering time and intensity can be adjusted, so it is especially effective for growing crops that are sensitive to nutrition and soil moisture.

Drip irrigation has many advantages over other types of irrigation. Drip irrigation significantly increases the efficiency of water use and improves the growth conditions of irrigated plants.

  • Precise and localized watering
  • Minimum amount of water loss
  • Maintaining air-water balance.
  • Possibility of adding minerals to water
  • Automation
  • Adaptability to any topographic conditions and different soils.

Currently, drip irrigation systems are widely used both in greenhouse production and in the open field for growing vegetables, fruits, shrubs and trees.

Main mistakes in the organization of watering

The organization of a drip irrigation system looks quite simple, especially if there are instructions for each irrigation system. However, summer residents often face problems with local irrigation. Let’s highlight the following difficulties when setting up irrigation:

  • Incorrect arrangement of irrigation or tubes, drippers
    The irrigation system components may be installed too close or too far apart. As a result, the water will not reach part of the territory in the required volume, the plants will begin to dry out and rot.
  • Incorrect pressure in the irrigation system.
  • If the pressure is low, the plants will receive less moisture than they need. If the pressure is too high, the system can stop working, especially with automation or low flow rates.
  • Mixed landings.
  • If plants with different requirements for the amount of moisture are located on the same irrigation line, it will not work normally to adjust the system. Plants will receive less water or die from its excess. When planning plantings, it is better to place them zonally, combining those species that require approximately the same watering intensity.
  • Deepening underground zones
    When submerged to the level of root growth, the drip tubes can gradually become clogged with shoots of the underground part of the plantings, destroyed under their influence. The problem is solved only by a minimal deepening - no more than 2-3 cm. In this case, the risks will be minimal.
  • Poor water treatment.
    Even the most advanced filters do not completely protect the droppers from contamination. When buying, pay attention to the filter - it must be strong, reliable and with a high-quality sieve.
  • Belt damage and misalignment.
    Strong winds, birds or other external factors can change the location of the system, which can lead to disruption of the irrigation system and the death of plants.

We have listed the main difficulties and mistakes that can be encountered when organizing autonomous root irrigation at the site.
