Pipe fittings: types and purpose

Fittings are specialized engineering products used for connecting, branching, bending, and changing the diameter of pipes, as well as connecting locking and control valves and heating devices to pipes. Fittings are widely used in all types of piping and are classified according to the installation method.

A pipe line assembled using fittings can be easily disassembled in the future, facilitating repair and cleaning processes. The system can also be easily upgraded by simply replacing the control element or regulator.

This article examines the types and characteristics of fittings from MPF, as well as the products that may be required during installation.

Material Specifications

MPF threaded connections are made from CW617N (LS 59-3) grade brass using hot forging. The chemical composition of CW617N brass provides an optimal ratio of strength and flexibility. An increase in the lead content in the alloy reduces strength and hardness, making the product more brittle.

Composition of CW617N brass:

  • Cu (Copper): 57-59%

  • Sn (Tin): 0.3%

  • Fe (Iron): 0.3%

  • Al (Aluminum): 0.05%

  • Pb (Lead): 1.6-2.6%

  • Ni (Nickel): 0.3%

  • Zn (Zinc): Balance

All MPF fittings have an additional nickel coating with a thickness of at least 7 microns across the entire surface, providing additional protection against leaching of individual elements in the brass and enhancing the product's appearance. Nickel coating is applied using the latest equipment, resulting in a bright, sometimes mirror-like surface similar to chrome.

Applications

Threaded fittings perform various functions in a pipeline system: they connect two pipes ending with threads or connect pipes with control valves, redirect and separate the flow of the working medium, serve as adapters between parts of different diameters or materials, and can close the system. Fittings are used wherever there is a water supply: in industry, residential buildings, agriculture, transport, urban infrastructure, and in both hot and cold water supply, heating, and gas supply systems.

Types of Fittings

The industry produces a vast number of connectors with various designs and technical specifications. Here, we will look at the most popular fittings manufactured by us, their types, and purposes:

- Nipple (Barrel): Has two external threads of the same size. Used to connect parts with internal threads of the same size.

- Transition Nipple (Barrel): Has two external threads of the same size. Used to connect parts with internal threads of different sizes.

- Coupling: Has two internal threads. Used to connect parts with external threads of the same size.

- Hex Coupling: Similar to a regular coupling but can be installed with an open-end wrench. Unique product manufactured only by MasterProf.

- Transition Coupling: Has two internal threads of different sizes. Used to connect parts with external threads of different sizes. Also features a hex body for installation with an open-end wrench.

- Bush: An adapter with internal and external threads, where the diameter of the external thread is always larger than the internal thread.

- Pass-through Bush: Similar to a regular bush but with the internal thread diameter always larger than the external thread diameter.

- I/I Elbow: Connects two parts of a pipeline at a 90° angle with two internal threads of the same size.

- I/I Pass-through Elbow: Connects two parts of a pipeline at a 90° angle with two internal threads of different sizes.

- I/T Limiting Elbow: Connects two parts of a pipeline at a 90° angle with one internal and one external thread of the same size, designed to prevent the sealing material from being squeezed out during installation.

- T/T Elbow: Connects two parts of a pipeline at a 90° angle with two external threads of the same size.

- I/I/I Tee: Connects an additional branch to the main pipeline with three internal threads of the same size.

- T/T/T Tee: Connects an additional branch to the main pipeline with three external threads of the same size.

- I/T/I Tee: Connects an additional branch to the main pipeline with internal and external threads of the same size.

- Cross: Connects two additional branches to the main pipeline with four internal threads of the same size.

Installation Method

The durability and reliability of pipes directly depend on the quality of the selected fittings, making it important to choose high-quality products. When selecting products, consider the following factors:

- The size of the fitting should match the size of the pipe.

- Among two identical fittings, choose the heavier one.

- Prefer coated fittings over uncoated brass fittings for additional protection.

- Choose fittings with grooves on the external threads to facilitate the application of sealing materials.

- The connection method should be chosen based on the potential loads the part may encounter.

- Reliable fitting manufacturers guarantee robust and reliable performance.

- Pay attention to the surface quality, avoiding roughness, bumps, or poorly finished seams.
